Panera traces its roots to the St. Louis Bread Company, which opened in Kirkwood, Missouri, in 1987; Au Bon Pain acquired it in 1993 and developed it into the Panera Bread concept, and some St. Louis-area cafes still carry the original name. The fast-casual chain is known for its Broccoli Cheddar Soup in a sourdough bread bowl, toasted sandwiches, salads and bakery items like the Cinnamon Crunch Bagel.
